Choose the Right Stainless Steel Grade for Your Application

Stainless steel is a popular choice through lots of industries, but not all stainless steel is created equal. At Atlas Steel, we know that choosing the right grade can make a big difference between a product that performs flawlessly or one that falls short.

In this month’s blog, we’re breaking down some of the most common stainless steel grades we work with and when they’re the best fit for a product.

304 Stainless Steel

This is the most widely used stainless steel grade, particularly because it offers excellent corrosion resistance, formability, and strength. This stainless steel grade is best used for many applications like:

  • Kitchen equipment
  • Food processing
  • Tanks
  • General fabrication

316 Stainless Steel

Grade 316 contains molybdenum, which gives it greater corrosion resistance. This means that it will perform better against chlorides and in acidic situations. Here’s projects where you would likely choose 316:

  • Marine applications
  • Chemical processing
  • Medical devices
  • Outdoor structural use

430 Stainless Steel

Ferritic by nature, 430 is a more affordable and magnetic steel, but keep in mind that it is less corrosion resistant. However, it still provides a great finish for decorative and indoor appliances. Here are some examples where you would want to choose 430:

  • Home appliances
  • Automotive trim
  • Architectural features

201 Stainless Steel

Austenitic Type 201 gives you good strength and moderate corrosion resistance. It’s often used as a more affordable alternative to 304 in less demanding environments. This type of stainless steel is best used for:

  • Restaurant equipment
  • Sinks
  • Lightweight structures
